A Fair Energy Deal: CES & Coalition Issues Call to Action for Scottish Government

Community Energy Scotland is pleased to share our Call to Action to the Scottish Government for a Fair Energy Deal for Communities.

A Fair Energy Deal: Scottish Community Coalition on Energy issues Call to Action for Government

Community Energy Scotland, as part of the Scottish Community Coalition on Energy (SCCE), is pleased to share a series of papers calling on the Scottish and UK Government to create a Fair Energy Deal for Communities.

The coalition, which is made up of Community Energy Scotland, Development Trusts Association Scotland, Community Land Scotland and Scottish Communities Finance, first published its Fair Energy Deal paper in April. The paper highlights seven calls to action, which will address barriers to community groups implementing new projects, raise ambitions for the sector (recognising what community energy can achieve), and ensure that communities can benefit from larger scale developments through improved community benefits and increased uptake of shared ownership opportunities.

Following the initial paper, the coalition has gone on to publish a set of case studies and further topic papers going into further detail on a proposal for a 1GW Community Energy Target, a proposal for a Community Wealth Fund, and a proposal to increase opportunities for shared ownership. A paper on community benefits will be published shortly.

CES and our partner organisations within the Scottish Community Coalition on Energy represent hundreds of community groups across the country and the calls to action within these papers are issued on behalf of our members.

We ask the Government and partners in parliament, local authorities, community groups, and other stakeholders to work together and bring forward these actions to maximise opportunities for Scottish communities from the energy revolution.

More details and further calls to action in the document links below the original seven key asks :

  1. Accelerate growth in the community energy sector
  2. Set a wholly owned community energy target – 1GW by 2030
  3. Address opportunities and challenges arising from repowering
  4. Increase uptake of shared ownership opportunities
  5. Mandate developers to report on community benefits
  6. Update Good Practice Principles for Community Benefits
  7. Create of a Scottish Community Wealth Fund
