Views invited on mandatory community benefits and shared ownership – UK Government

It was announced today, 21 May, that the UK Government will be seeking views from all interested organisations to make community shared ownership and community benefits mandatory for private renewable energy developers.

This is excellent news in response to Community Energy Scotland advocating for these two priorities with the support of enabling organisations, Development Trusts Association Scotland and Community Land Scotland.

This stage builds on the Government’s aim “to ensure that communities hosting infrastructure receive high quality benefits in a consistent manner by building on existing voluntary approaches to community benefits”.

The consultation is in two parts. 1) Feedback on the design of a potential mandatory community benefits scheme which would require developers to contribute a set amount to a community fund; 2) Views on how best to facilitate shared ownership of renewable energy generation infrastructure.

We will invite members to feed in ideas and will share a draft response with you before the deadline of 16 July.
