Bonnie Zhu
Shetland Rural Energy Hub Officer
Bonnie is part of the Rural Energy Hub team, working closely with communities in Shetland to support their decarbonisation strategies.
Bonnie joined the Community Energy Scotland team in November 2024 to assist Shetland communities in their transition towards net-zero. Her current role involves supporting community transport strategies within Shetland, as well as engaging with community organisations to help them achieve their targets while sharing expert knowledge.
After completing a degree in Environmental Science and Politics at the University of Stirling, Bonnie began working in the active travel sector, promoting travel behaviours such as walking, cycling, and wheeling. This sparked her interest in reducing the transport sector’s environmental impact and underlined the power of community-led initiatives. Through this experience, Bonnie developed a deeper understanding of the significance of transport choices, the issue of transport inequalities, and their integration into everyday life.
Bonnie also had the opportunity to volunteer in Porto with an association called Critical Concrete, which deepened her interest in climate justice and building sustainable infrastructure at a community level using local resources. This enriching experience reinforced her commitment to supporting bottom-up strategies and empowering communities with the skills and knowledge needed to create a just transition.
Outside of work, Bonnie enjoy being outdoors and discovering local gems! You’ll most likely find her swimming in the sea or at a local coffee shop drawing with watercolours!
