Jack Comerford

Assistant Technical Officer

Jack’s role is part of CES technical team providing support on many of the technical areas of our work.

I joined the team at Community Energy Scotland as Assistant Technical Officer in July 2024 and I provide technical support on a range of community energy projects. So far, I have been working on an options appraisal for renewable electricity generation.

Growing up, I was really interested in nature, learning about wildlife and their habitats. This led to my interest in renewable energy as a way of protecting the environment from climate change. As I got older, I began to appreciate the importance of energy security and the impact that renewable energy has on people. I studied an integrated Master’s in Physics with Renewable Energy Science at the University in Dundee. This degree allowed me to develop my problem-solving abilities, and my analytical and mathematical skills. I learned about a range of renewable energy technologies as well as gaining experience in coding where I frequently used MATLAB and Python. My master’s project was on the analysis of a concept “hydrostatic device” that had been proposed as a means of renewable electricity generation and this work provided me with valuable experience in communicating pieces of technical work.

In the summertime I worked at Craigtoun Country Park in St Andrews near to where I live. I had various roles at the park including Duty Manager where I managed the park’s various amenities. I thoroughly enjoyed these roles as they allowed me to spend my summers outside in the sun. When I was 16, I completed a World Challenge Expedition to Sri Lanka where I helped to build a classroom at a rural village temple. Experiencing a culture so different from my own was super interesting and I would love to go back to Sri Lanka someday.

Outside of work, I like to spend my time bouldering, running and attempting to win pub quizzes. I also like going to see bands that I like, and being only a couple hours from Glasgow is great as the music scene there is really good. I enjoy watching both football and Formula 1 although I am unfortunately not very good at either of the sports!
